LIJA YOUTHS OPEN DAY AND EXHIBITION

Young people from the Lija Youths' group will be opening the doors of their youth centre this Friday for an Open Day and exhibition. The main themes being tackled during this event are history, success, progress and creativity. In a statement the group said: "The idea behind the Open Day is to show the public in general and the Lija community in particular the work that was carried out by the youth centre during the last five years".

Solidarity with Manikata Farmers - PR Ekologika

Civil society coalition Eko-Logika expressed its solidarity with Manikata farmers who are being evicted to make way for a proposed golf course at Xaghra l-Hamra. Eko-Logika declared that it will be actively supporting the \r\nplight of the farmers. Eko-Logika said: “We are supporting the thirty farmers who filed a judicial protest claiming that the land they farmed in Manikata was being taken away from them illegally and abusively in order to make way for a golf course.

Moviment Graffitti is very worried on the current situation of nuclear weapons and of the stockpiling of weapons of mass destruction. Right now the biggest nuclear-armed power in the world and the only state which used nuclear bombs on citizens and people is pressuring minor states not to arm themselves with a nuclear device. The US which is the purveyor of this pressure is in possession of at least 70,000 nuclear warheads, and these alone have the potential to destroy our world many times over.

Protest Against Japanese Warships

Friday 29th July 2005. Activists from Moviment Graffitti held a protest against three Japanese Warships at the Pinto Wharf area of the grand harbour. The group deployed a banner besides the parked ship which was immediately confiscated by VISET (the company which has exclusive rights over the harbour area) employees.

Hunger Strike suspended at Floriana detention center

July 26th 2005. IMC Malta has just learned that the hunger strike by detainees at the Floriana detention center has been suspended. Detainees who have been long waiting for their humanitarian protection started the strike last Sunday. The government has a policy of detaining for up to eighteen months all those who are picked up by police officers in Maltese waters and apply for asylum, a system which is discriminatory against those who apply for asylum while already in Malta.
