Sleep Disorders ?

Dreaming of a great night’s sleep!

In school, i learned that sleep aids made you skip REM sleep, so it would have been better to go with alternative less medicated methods to sleep. I’ve heard people though say that, on sleep aids they wake up replenished just the same as if they had their REM sleep. So was the information outdate, or possibly something overlooked?

It depends on the sleep aid. I prefer Valerian root pills. They are a natural supplement, and they put me into a deep deep REM. I also don’t wake up all groggy, but it is harder to pull me out of sleep. I can’t wake up to an alarm. They give you extremely vivid dreams they are really neat.

When you are out and your toddler falls asleep in the car do you leave them to sleep in the car when you get home and sit in there with them? I also leave the motor and air conditioning on. Is this OK?

I’m not sure if this is what you are meaning but you should NEVER leave your child alone in a car.Especially with the motor running and the air on. It only takes 2 seconds for someone to get in and take off with your baby and your car,and half the time the ppl who take the car get rid of the baby if they even notice the baby in there.I know thats awful to say but its true.
If you are just talkin about stayin in the car until baby wakes up I would say no. Babies get on routines and dependant on those routines. So unless you plan on taking baby for a car ride EVERYTIME they are having trouble sleeping and plan on sitting in the car for anywhere from 1-4 hrs if not longer then I would say no.Thats why you should always put them in their bed(if you are home) before going to sleep so they can get used to the routine of not being rocked/held to go to sleep because they will demand this everytime its time for bed. Also constant cold from the A/C can cause baby to catch a cold and even tho its perfectly normal and healthy for babies to get anywhere from 5-12 colds the first yr of their life if you can avoid them gettin one then do it(such as no air conditioning for constant periods of time). This goes for toddlers as well. Toddlers adapt to different sleep habits better than babies do so when your toddler falls asleep in the car when you get home take them inside and put them in their bed.Sometimes they will be cranky becaues they were disturbed but this happens whether they are moved during sleep or a loud noise wakes them or whatever else could happen to wake them up. But yeah I would suggest not leaving them in the car/sitting til they wake and taking them inside and laying them in their bed.

It is common (or possible) to suffer from sleep apnea if you only sleep on your stomach or side?

I’ve been diagnosed with combination of obstructive/central sleep apnea more than 4 years ago. The short answer to your question is yes. It is a problem even if you don’t sleep on your back. However I am having less episodes of apnea when I am not sleeping on my back.

Hi, I’m fourteen, and I rarely sleep.

It usually takes me about an hour to two hours, and in extreme nights, three to four. I don’t think this is normal at all, being a teenager, I’m supposed to sleep more, am I right?

I do have some anxiety, to the point of shaking. As in, when I see my therapist, after talking about my problems for an hour, I’m practically spazzing out. She says that’s normal though. o_O

Back to sleeping…
I don’t know if I should see a doctor, or what, maybe ask my therapist for sleep pills?

Also, on weekends, I usually stay up to the wee hours of the morning, even if I don’t want to, playing computer games, or watching tv. I try to go to bed, but after laying there for fifteen minutes, I give up, and go open up my notebook, or turn on the tv.

One more thing, I sleep a lot through the day, after not getting any sleep at night. Like, I sleep on the way to school, during Algebra (D:) and on the way home from school (that takes an hour).

What should I do? Should I go to a sleep center?

Tell your therapist. She will help you.

MY SLEEP BREAKS SPONTANEOUSLY AFTER 3 HOURS AND IT IS HAPPENING ON REGULAR BASIS.A HEALTHY PERSON REQUIRES AT LEAST 7-8 HOURS SLEEP. WHAT SHOULD I DO FOR MY SLEEP DISTURBANCE, SUGGESTION PLEASE.

If you are doing the right things , then it could be hormonal imbalances , or something……..
You can order NARDOVA by white tiger……..it works really well
You can have your hormones checked , thyroid, sex, adrenal, cortisol, DHEAS
sleep in a dark room
no light before sleep
no high tech one hour before
etc………
you can also try sleepy time and chamomile tea (two bags before bed)
no one should take valerian root over an extended period of time , because it is a ‘heating’ herb and can increase the reason one isnt sleeping in the first place, one should be evaluated by an herb expert, usually acupuncturists are trained in herbs also
I think there are other reasons , but these should do it for you

My father just got his machine and finds it very uncomfortable he actually thinks hes losing sleep. Has anyone else had this problem? Do you know of any group forums on sleep apnea to go on

It takes some getting use to. I’ve had mine over a year now and sometimes if the head strap stretches and I don’t readjust it, I have trouble. If he’s using the nose pillow, he may find the mask more comfortable. There is one mask that covers the nose and mouth, but I have the one that just covers the nose. The company I deal with let me change my nose pillow for the comfort mask (nose mask) and I got credit for returning the nose pillow. I find that I do go to sleep faster and don’t wake up nearly as often as I used to. I never wake with chest pains from not breathing and then taking breaths. Good luck and God bless.

My psychiatrist suspects that I spend too much time in the REM stage of sleep. He mentioned a sleep study perhaps in the future, but is there anything I can do NOW to decrease the amount of time I spend in REM sleep?

Spending too much time in REM sleep is strongly indicative of Narcolepsy. The only way to suppress REM sleep is with a specialty drug called Xyrem which causes the body to correctly go through the sleep cycle rather than always be in REM sleep. So, right now, no there is nothing you can do but to wait until after the sleep study (and I’m assuming a multiple sleep-latency test which is a nap study) until you get the results so the doctor can properly treat you.

Best of luck to you!

Recently, how to do always insomnia, can let sleep better?

Get rid of distractions. This includes taking your work to bed or leaving the television on until all hours of the night. Your bed is your refuge and rest place, bringing your work to bed defeats this purpose and hinders sleep. And if you must watch television in bed, head to bed early and shut it off well before it’s time to sleep. Using the sleep button on your television doesn’t help as flickering lights and noises can disturb your sleep.

Getting enough sleep is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Insomnia can affect you mentally and physically. It can make you feel tired, depressed and irritable. It can also make it hard for you to concentrate or perform tasks during the day. If you don’t get enough sleep on a regular basis, you’re at increased risk of diseases such as high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes.

Your family doctor may ask you some questions about your sleep habits (such as when you go to bed and when you get up), what medicines you take, and your intake of caffeine and alcohol. Your doctor may also ask if you smoke.

Your doctor may ask how long you’ve been having insomnia and if you have any pain (such as from arthritis). If you have a bed partner, your doctor may ask him or her if you snore while you sleep. Your doctor may also ask about events or problems in your life that may be upsetting you and making it hard for you to sleep.Take a hot bath before bedtime. This will help you feel drowsy and relaxed.

Take care as always

There were 2 days in the past few months when I slept for 20 hours Was that because of the sleep apnea?

If you have sleep apnea and it is not being treated properly, then yes.
